Associazione Sportiva Roma Football Club was founded in 1927 by Italo Foshi, who initiated the merger of three Italian Football Championship clubs from the city of Rome, Roman, Alba-Audace and Fortitudo. The aim of the merger was to give the City a strong club to rival the more dominant Northern roma clubs of the time. The only club to resist the merger was Lazio who were already well established.
In the beginning AS Roma played at the Motovelodromo Appio stadium, before relocating to the streets of Testaccio, where in November 1929 it built an all-wooden ground Campo Testaccio. AS Roma made it's mark in Italy in the 1930-31 championship, where the club finished as runners-up behind Juventus. Their captain Attilio Ferraris along with Goalkeeper Guido Masetti, defender Fulvio Bernardini and striker Rodolfo Volk were pivotal players during this period.
